What is anal sex?
Anal sex is a sexual activity where the penis is inserted into the bottom, and is often called "rectal sex". Many people believe that anal sex is the preserve of gay men but this is not generally the case. It is estimated that a quarter to a third of heterosexual couples occasionally include anal sex in their love making.

The majority of people's anal love making experiences are positive but we have listed below some common sense steps you should take when first trying anal sex with your partner:

  1. Make sure as a couple you are both in the mood, but also especially the person who will be having the penis placed in their anus. There are not many people who when feeling tense and stressed want to indulge in anal sex. You both need to be in a relaxed atmosphere.
  2. Choose the right position - "doggy style" anal intercourse is the preferred way for many, though spooning (you lay on your side with your partner behind you) is known to be intimate and pleasurable for both.
  3. It takes time to build trust, without trust between you both then you might want to consider something else as one painful anal experience can ruin that. Ensure you both know and understand what you are getting into. The more you trust each othe, the more enjoyable anal sex will be for both of you.
  4. Relaxation is important. Rushing into anal intercourse is not a wise idea. We recommend that you both play with each other and allow him time to stroke your bottom to help relax your anus and the sphincter.
  5. Lubricate, lubricate, lubricate. Use plenty and keep lubrication to hand when you need more. It's highly likely you'll have to use more than you think you would.

Is Anal sex safe?
Taken steadily and with care, anal intercourse is safely possible for many couples looking to take part in this sexual activity. Ensure the anus is clean and the bowel is empty (this prevents risk of the receiving partner passing faeces during sex).

The skin around the sphincter is a highly sensitive muscle so care must be taken to gently stretch it (have the receiving partner relax the muscle as much as possible) to accommodate an erect penis.

The inserting partner must be gentle, using plenty of care and lubrication - pushing harder is not the answer when first trying anal sex. Allow the receptive partner time to relax their anus' sphincter and with time and practice this will become easier.

Anal intercourse is a pleasurable sexual activity for many couples, it can be for you too if done gently and carried out with care.
